Exercise and Pregnancy Workshop

This Strand 1 workshop is suitable for all levels of graduates, and is designed to provide both male and female physiotherapists and allied health professionals with the confidence to work safely with pregnant and post-partum women.  It is particularly appropriate for newer physiotherapy graduates and allied health professionals working with women during and after pregnancy.

  • Do you feel confident teaching specific exercise to pregnant clients?
  • Do you know how to apply the latest research on managing low back pain during pregnancy?
  • Do you know how to assess and advise your client when and how it is safe to exercise after delivery?
  • What are the best stability belts / taping techniques to use with your pregnant clients?

This workshop will not only get you up to date with the latest research on pregnancy, exercise and stability but will also offer practical tips you can use immediately. You will also have the opportunity to use Real Time Ultrasound to assess stability muscles specific to pregnancy related problems.

Workshop aims and objectives
At the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to: 

  • understand the aims and benefits of exercise training for pregnant women. 
  • understand the following changes that occur in the pregnant state:image
    • musculoskeletal
    • cardiovascular
    • respiratory
    • hormonal
    • metabolic
    • nutritional
  • demonstrate their understanding of how the above changes affect maternal exercise tolerance and also how these changes affect the foetus.
  • understand how to appropriately modify their exercise prescription based on the above information.
  • apply the current guidelines on exercise prescription for pregnant women
  • show their knowledge of the precautions and contraindications to exercise during pregnancy.
  • apply various exercise options appropriate to each stage of pregnancy
  • understand the specific requirements of women returning to exercise post birth.
  • understand when to refer their client for medical or physiotherapy review.

All our workshops offer innovative exercise and assessment and treatment techniques based on current available research. After completion of even one workshop, both your patients and you will notice your expertise will move to a new level.
